In Short
When Hamburg celebrates the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival at the end of May, Japanese culture takes center stage for an entire weekend. The Japan Festival Hamburg is one of the city’s most popular cultural events and attracts thousands of visitors every year to the Japanese Garden in Planten un Blomen. Together with the traditional fireworks display over the Außenalster, it forms the highlight of a festival that honors the close relationship between Hamburg and Japan. During our visit, it quickly became clear why the festival attracts so many people: the combination of Japanese cuisine, cultural performances, hands-on activities, and live shows creates an entertaining day for visitors of all ages.
A Tradition That has Been Part of Hamburg for Decades
The Cherry Blossom Festival has a long history in Hamburg. Since 1968, the Japanese community has used the festival to thank the Hanseatic city for its hospitality. In the 1960s, several thousand cherry trees were also planted at various locations throughout Hamburg. Today, the festival is much more than a tribute to the cherry blossom. It is a symbol of the close German-Japanese relationship and brings together people every year who are passionate about Japanese culture.

The Japanese Garden as the Perfect Setting
The Japan Festival traditionally takes place in the Japanese Garden at Planten un Blomen. With its beautifully designed ponds, bridges, and green spaces, the garden provides the perfect setting for the event. Numerous stalls, stages, and activity areas are spread throughout the different sections of the garden. No matter whether you come for the food, the culture, or simply the unique atmosphere, there is always something to discover.
Japanese Specialties and Long Queues
One of the biggest attractions of the festival is its many food stalls. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of Japanese specialties and street food offerings. However, it is worth bringing a bit of patience. During our visit this year, the festival was extremely crowded, and long queues formed at many of the stalls.

We were especially happy to see Tokiyo Sandwiches return once again. The Hamburg-based shop is one of our absolute favorites and has become an essential part of our festival visit every year.
From Taiko to Cosplay: The Cultural Program
The heart of the festival is its diverse cultural program. Throughout the day, traditional and modern performances alternate on stage. Among the highlights are the impressive Taiko drummers, whose powerful rhythms can be heard far beyond the festival grounds. Martial arts demonstrations, traditional performances, and other cultural presentations also provide fascinating insights into Japanese culture. Modern elements are equally well represented. Cosplayers have become an integral part of the festival and, together with the many stalls, help create a colorful and lively atmosphere.
The Fireworks Display over the Außenalster
In addition to the Japan Festival, the large fireworks display over the Außenalster is one of the highlights of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Every year, thousands of people gather along the Alster to watch the spectacle light up the night sky. In 2026, the fireworks will take place on May 29 at 10:30 PM, marking the festive opening of the Cherry Blossom Festival weekend.
