In Short
There are moments in concerts that simply linger in the memory — not only because of the music, but also because of the atmosphere that bathes everything in a warm, almost magical light. We had just such an experience at a candlelight concert in Hamburg. If you’re looking for a special evening that combines classical music, atmospheric lighting, and extraordinary locations, you shouldn’t miss this series of events.
Thousands of Candles, an Unforgettable Evening
Imagine walking into a room lit only by the flickering light of hundreds of candles. No bright stage lights, no LED wall — just warm, soft candlelight reflecting off the walls and immediately dimming the mood. That’s exactly how it was at the Kulturkirche Altona, a place that has a very special aura all its own with its architecture and high ceilings.
We were lucky enough to attend a Christmas performance featuring music from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” and other atmospheric classical pieces. The program was performed by musicians with roots in classical and jazz. You can hear this mixture in the music: the pieces sounded soulful, lively, and honest.

More than Classic
The beauty of Candlelight concerts lies in their diversity. In addition to classical programs such as Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” or Mozart evenings, there are also really cool crossover events: rock anthems in string quartet versions or evenings featuring the greatest hits of Coldplay and Imagine Dragons – without vocals, but interpreted so soulfully that you immediately recognize which song is being played. And that’s exactly what makes the Candlelight series so special: you experience familiar songs in a whole new way – reduced to the essentials, surrounded by a sea of candles.
Hamburg as a Stage
What we particularly like: The concerts take place at a wide variety of venues in Hamburg. From historic churches to theaters to small, hidden venues, there’s something for everyone. This gives each concert its own unique character – and gives you a new reason to look forward to an evening full of music and atmosphere.
Tip: A ticket is also the perfect last-minute Christmas gift!
