In Short
A bit of funfair flair, a touch of Las Vegas and a lot of “Wow!” – that’s what a visit to the Charles Knie Circus in Hamburg feels like. And if you think circus is just for kids, then you haven’t been to this show yet. Because what’s put on here is more than just juggling and clowns – it’s a real spectacle that combines acrobatics, dance, water shows and circus tradition in a rather modern way.
A Beautiful Circus Tent
The marquee opens its doors an hour before the event begins – a mix of food stall, twinkling lights and anticipation. Here you can stock up on bratwurst, chips, candy floss or a slushie while the hustle and bustle slowly builds up. And then it starts: the big tent fills up, excited children’s voices everywhere, expectant looks – and yes, it’s pretty crowded and the air quickly gets a little stuffy. So better not put on your thickest sweater.
Water, Light, Acrobatics and Plenty of Goosebumps
What follows is hard to put into words: 100,000 liters of water roaring through 300 pumps, 15-meter-high fountains, flashes of light in time to the music and artists who seem to ignore gravity. The stage is hydraulically movable on three levels, which makes for incredible transitions and perspectives – sometimes you think you’re in an underwater world, sometimes in the middle of a futuristic dance show.
The artists show everything they can do – from trapeze and diabolo to pole acrobatics. Plus a show ballet that sets the whole ring alight with costumes, light shows and energy. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, there’s a finale that really floods all the senses. The sound is rich, the lighting perfectly coordinated and the choreography super synchronized.
A Little Criticism is Necessary
As enthusiastic as we were, one thing still bothered us: even though Charles Knie Circus doesn’t use large wild animals, there are still dogs and parrots in the show. Sure, they look well cared for and their performances are not exaggerated – but we think that a show at this level no longer needs animals. The artistry alone is strong enough to thrill the audience.
Another spectacle on the Heiligengeistfeld: Dinner in the Sky – only until 08.06.2025!

Whether you are traveling with kids or simply fancy an unusual show experience – Circus Charles Knie in Hamburg is a clear recommendation. The mixture of water show, circus classics and modern staging is absolutely worth seeing. - It’s best to buy tickets online: the tent is often very busy, especially at weekends and in good weather.
- Clothing: It can quickly get warm and stuffy inside – so better come in an onion look.
