In Short
Hamburg is known for its harbor, impressive architecture and vibrant city life. But a trip to this fascinating city doesn’t have to tear a hole in your wallet. Here are five great free things to do in Hamburg. Get inspired and discover Hamburg on a budget!
1. A Walk Through Hamburg’s Diversity
There is no better way to explore Hamburg than on foot. The city offers a variety of walking options that take you through different neighborhoods and sights.
- The harbor: Stroll along the Landungsbrücken and enjoy the view of the ships and the hustle and bustle of the port.
- St. Pauli: Explore this lively district with its colorful mix of history and modern attractions.
- Jungfernstieg: A walk along the banks of the Alster takes you through one of Hamburg’s most elegant areas.
- Parks: Hamburg’s numerous parks, such as the Stadtpark or Planten un Blomen, invite you to take a relaxing stroll.
- Außenalster: A walk around the Outer Alster offers you peace and nature in the middle of the city.
2. The Balcony of the Elbphilharmonie: A Free View
A visit to the Elbphilharmonie is a must, and the best thing about it: access to the balcony is free! Get a ticket at the ticket office, scan it, and you can enjoy the spectacular view over the harbor and the city. The Elbphilharmonie itself is an architectural masterpiece, and the panoramic view from the top is definitely worth it. Even if you can only enter the concert halls with a paid tour or ticket, the balcony alone is worth a visit.
3. Underneath the Elbe: The St. Pauli Elbtunnel
The old Elbtunnel, also known as the St. Pauli Elbtunnel, is a historic structure that takes you under the Elbe. Access is free and offers a unique experience. Large elevators or stairs take you down into the tunnel. On the other side, a fantastic view of the city and the opportunity to enjoy cool drinks and snacks awaits you.
4. Harbor Tour with the HVV Ferry
With an HVV ticket, you can use line 62 and take a short harbor tour at no extra cost. This ferry takes you past many sights and offers a wonderful opportunity to see the harbor from a new perspective. Of course, a big harbor tour is also highly recommended, but if you’re on a budget, the HVV ferry is a great alternative.
5. Magical Water Light Concert in Planten un Blomen Park
The water light concerts at Planten un Blomen park are a real highlight in Hamburg. From May to the end of September, you can experience great (and free) light and water shows here every day. From May to August, the shows start at 10 pm, from September at 9 pm. During the day, there are also water shows without lights and music at 4 and 6 pm. Entry to the park is also free, and it’s worth a visit at any time of year.
