In Short
In the middle of Hamburg’s green heart, the Stadtpark, the Hamburg Planetarium rises up like an oversized lighthouse – and that’s exactly what it used to be: a water tower! Today, the impressive brick building is one of the oldest planetariums in Germany and looks so chic from the outside that you almost forget that the best is actually waiting for you inside (and on top!).
A Building With the Wow Factor
As soon as you enter the “Stadtpark“, the Planetarium Hamburg immediately catches your eye. It looks a bit like a temple of science – massive, proud, almost monumental. Especially in spring and summer, when the greenery around it is in full bloom, it creates an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. A real photo opportunity!
Rather Plain Inside – but then Comes the Show
The interior is modern and tidy, but honestly not a must-see on its own. The highlight is definitely the shows in the large domed hall. We watched “The sky over Hamburg in spring” – and were surprised at how exciting astronomy can be!
In the 45-minute show, we were shown which constellations and planets you can discover directly over Hamburg in spring. The projections on the huge dome really take you up into space, while the narrator explains everything in an easy-to-understand way. The best thing is that the show is suitable for children and adults alike – without any pedagogical finger-wagging, but with lots of aha moments.
By the way, there are also special children’s programs with more imagination and stories if you are traveling with the family.
The Sky Over Hamburg – Close Enough to Touch
With your ticket, you can also go up to the viewing platform before or after the show – a real insider tip! An elevator takes you up to a height of around 40 meters, from where you can enjoy a 360-degree view over the Stadtpark and the whole of Hamburg. Especially in spring/summer, when everything is in bloom, this is an absolute dream. From up here, you can really see how green our city actually is.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- How to get there: The best way to get to the Planetarium is to take the U3 to “Borgweg” or the bus (e.g. line 6, stop “Stadtpark”). From there it is about a 10-minute walk through the Stadtpark.
- Tickets & prices: A regular show costs around €12 per person (as of 2025). Discounts are available for schoolchildren, students or with the Hamburg Card, for example. Secure online tickets in advance, especially at weekends!
- Best time to visit: Spring and summer are ideal – then the viewing platform is particularly worthwhile. Plan your visit for later in the afternoon and enjoy a picnic in the park afterwards.
- Refreshments: There’s a small café in the foyer with snacks and drinks, but you can also just bring your own food and relax after your visit to the city park.
The Planetarium in Hamburg may not be a classic sightseeing highlight, but it’s definitely an experience you won’t soon forget. A little education, a lot of amazement – and a magnificent view on top. Perfect for a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
