In Short
On April 8, 2025, Hamburg gained a new highlight: Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier opened its doors, bringing a breath of fresh air to HafenCity. With a mix of shopping, culture and entertainment on over 420,000 square meters, the quarter sets new standards.
Shopping Experience in a Class of its Own
With over 170 retail outlets and restaurants, Überseequartier offers an impressive variety. From international brands to local boutiques, there is something for every taste. Germany’s largest Zara store and the first Breuninger department store in northern Germany are particularly noteworthy. The Lego Discovery Center has also found its place here.
Kinopolis HafenCity – Hamburg’s largest cinema
Attention movie fans: With its ten screens and almost 2,200 seats, Kinopolis HafenCity is the largest cinema in Hamburg. State-of-the-art technology such as D-Box Motion Seats and Dolby Atmos sound ensure an incomparable movie experience. Comfortable premium armchairs and sofas for two invite you to linger.

Port des Lumières – Experience Art in a New Way
Art becomes an experience at the Port des Lumières. The first permanent center for immersive art in Hamburg presents works by Gustav Klimt and Friedensreich Hundertwasser in impressive 360° projections. With 80 projectors and 50 audio distributors on 3,200 square meters, art comes to life here.
Architecture Meets Maritime Flair
The quarter consists of 13 buildings that combine living, working and leisure. A cruise terminal, three hotels and around 580 apartments complete the offer. With its open design and glass facades, the architecture is reminiscent of Hamburg’s maritime tradition.
Criticism and Downsides: Between Glamor and Reality
As impressive as the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is, there are also critical voices. There were several serious accidents during the construction phase, including a scaffolding accident in October 2023 in which five construction workers lost their lives. Reports of poor safety standards and working conditions led to protests by trade unions and construction workers during the opening. There were also delays and cost increases, which led to the project being criticized.
The question of whether Hamburg needs another large shopping center is also being discussed. Some fear that inner-city retailers will be squeezed out and competition will intensify. Nevertheless, the quarter offers new opportunities for culture, leisure and living.
The Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is therefore a place of contrasts – between architectural splendor and the challenges associated with its creation.
