In Short
If you visit Hamburg, a trip to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall is a must. The plaza in particular offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the harbor – and the best thing about it: admission is free!
How to get There
The Elbphilharmonie is hard to miss and is located right at the top of HafenCity. As soon as you arrive at the bottom, you can queue at the ticket office for a free ticket. This ticket gives you access to the plaza. There is also the option to buy tickets in advance for 3 € to make sure you get in at a certain time. However, we cannot recommend this, as you can usually get in for free without booking in advance.
Up the Escalator to the Plaza
A special highlight is the ride on the huge escalator that takes you up to the Plaza. This escalator, also known as the “Tube”, is impressively long and already gives you a taste of what awaits you at the top during the ride.
Modern Style and Impressive Architecture
Once at the top, you will be amazed by the modern architecture and the large glass fronts of the Elbphilharmonie. The plaza is 37 meters high and offers a breathtaking view over the port of Hamburg and the city. There is also a café and the impressive Blick Bar. The prices are a little higher, but the fantastic view is well worth the visit. There is also a small souvenir store where you can pick up souvenirs of your visit.
Special Areas and Guided Tours
With the free ticket, you can only visit the balcony/plaza. To see the large and small halls, you must either take part in a guided tour or buy a ticket for a performance. The Elbphilharmonie offers various guided tours where you can learn more about the history and architecture of the building.
Fun fact: Did you know that a piece of the Berlin Wall stands in front of the Elbphilharmonie? Now you know and can even discover a small part of Berlin on your Hamburg tour!
Practical Tips:
- Visiting time: The plaza can get very crowded at certain times, as the Elbphilharmonie is a Hamburg landmark. Try to come early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowds.
- Accessibility: The plaza is completely barrier-free and there is an elevator to take you to the top. There are also free visitor toilets at the top, which are located near the café.
- Cost: Entry to the plaza is free, but you have to pay for special guided tours and performances.
Conclusion
A visit to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza is an absolute must on your trip to Hamburg. The free admission, the impressive architecture, the sweeping views over the harbor and the city – all this makes this place an unforgettable experience. And if you then linger in the café or Blick Bar, your visit will be perfectly rounded off.
