In Short
Hamburg’s harbor promenade is lively and offers a lot of sights and activities. Especially around the birthday of the port, the area transforms into a vibrant center full of tourists and locals. Here you can find out more about the port of Hamburg and its many facets.
Start at the St. Pauli Elbtunnel
Start your day at the historic St. Pauli Elbtunnel. The tunnel, which runs under the Elbe, is an impressive structure and a real eye-catcher. A walk through the tunnel is an experience in itself and a great start to your day at the harbor.
Tourist Highlights and Shops
Along the harbor promenade, you will come across people offering harbor tours in many places. A little tip: you can often bargain well here, especially if you walk from the fish market towards the harbor on Sundays. The harbor tour itself is great and offers you a wonderful view of Hamburg from the water.
Culinary Delights
You can enjoy delicious fish sandwiches (“Fischbrötchen“) and other fast food such as fries and currywurst at the stalls located near the Landungsbrücken subway station. The quality is not the best, but bear in mind that these are typical tourist stalls.
By the way: you will find relatively clean toilets near bridge 4 – but they do cost money.
Nearby you’ll find Café Melt, Luigi’s und Ti Breizh – restaurants that are definitely worth a visit!
Historic Ships and Museums
The historic ships Rickmer Rickmers and Cap San Diego are particularly impressive. Both ships are museum pieces and offer unique experiences. You can climb on the Rickmer Rickmers and there are even escape rooms on the Cap San Diego. Both ships are worth a visit and offer you an insight into Hamburg’s maritime history.
Artists and Street Music
As you stroll along the promenade, you will come across many street performers – from people posing as statues to musicians and a woman who delights children with giant soap bubbles. A tip: If you take photos of the ‘statue people’, give them a small donation. They work hard for their money and a small gesture shows your appreciation.
Along the Harbor Promenade
A special highlight is the Feuerschiff, a charming ship that is also worth a visit. Close by, you can take a look at the stylish building where the ALEX is located. Here you can sit on the terrace when the weather is nice – even if there are better restaurants nearby, it’s nice for a drink.
The Finale: The Elbphilharmonie
If you continue walking towards the Elbphilharmonie, you will cross the Niederbaumbrücke and pass what is probably Hamburg’s cutest police station, Hafenpolizeiwache No. 2. Your destination is the impressive Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The modern and iconic building can be seen from afar.
Practical Tips:
- Best time: It’s particularly nice in the early morning or late afternoon, when it’s not quite so crowded.
- Food: Try the fish sandwiches at the Landungsbrücken, but don’t expect culinary excellence.
- Harbor cruise: Always worth it – try to negotiate to get a better price.
- Photo tips: Remember to give the street performers a small donation when you take photos.
A walk along the Jan Fedder Promenade to the Elbphilharmonie is a fantastic way to experience Hamburg’s harbor and its sights. Enjoy the atmosphere, the history and the numerous little highlights that this route has to offer.
