In Short
Amidst twinkling lights, the scent of mulled wine, and shimmering red curtains, things will heat up again at Spielbudenplatz from mid-November: Santa Pauli is back — Hamburg’s “hottest” Christmas market. And if you’re only thinking of gingerbread hearts and tinsel, you’ve definitely never been to the Kiez during Advent. Because what goes on here is not for the faint-hearted – but an absolute must for anyone who likes an unconventional, cheeky, and thoroughly entertaining pre-Christmas season.
Christmas Market Meets Reeperbahn Charm
Welcome to Hamburg’s only Christmas market where you can see a little skin among the pine branches. In the middle of Spielbudenplatz — framed by the Reeperbahn, Schmidt Theater, and Schmidts Tivoli — the heart of St. Pauli is transformed into a festive and erotic winter wonderland. Between mulled wine stalls and fir trees, live music, strip shows on stage, and a healthy dose of neighborhood flair create a Christmas atmosphere with a difference.
What’s on offer here is a mix of contemplative tradition and plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor. You can browse the charmingly to wickedly decorated stalls, search for original gifts, or simply drift along — accompanied by beats, sparkling lights, and the scent of mulled wine.

Mulled Wine With a Twist: Santa’s Mulled Wine Pharmacy
A real highlight (and quite unique) is Santa’s Mulled Wine Pharmacy. Here, your hot drinks aren’t just pushed across the counter — you mix them yourself! Using pipettes, you can create your own personal mulled wine blend from high-quality white and red wines. Included are flavors such as cinnamon, orange, star anise, and even plum. The absolute insider tip is the legendary unicorn mulled wine, which is only available on Mondays. The pharmacists in white coats and the lovingly old-fashioned decor ensure a genuine “drinking experience” – we tried the “Alkobiotikum” and thought it was great!
Cuisine like the Neighborhood Itself: Wild, Hearty, Delicious
Of course, you won’t miss out on culinary delights either – with genuine St. Pauli charm. We tried a little bit of everything:
- Luke’s Outback Burger: We tried the vegetarian version (€9.50) and were really pleasantly surprised — super juicy and wonderfully seasoned. We had potato gems (€5.80) on the side, which were crispy and perfect for snacking.
- Mushroom bread: For €9, you get a serving of fried mushrooms on crispy bread – great taste, but a bit on the pricey side.
- The Crumble Bar: Be sure to save room for dessert! For €6.50, you get a serving of freshly baked crumble – we had apple compote, warm and topped with a crispy crumble topping. Really good comfort food for cold winter evenings.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Opening hours: Santa Pauli runs from November 10 to December 23, 2025 – daily from late afternoon until evening. You can find more details on site or on the official website.
- Admission: The market is completely free, including the shows – but as always, the earlier you arrive, the better the seats.
- Cash is king: Not all stands accept cards, so it’s best to bring some cash with you.
- Location & how to get there: Spielbudenplatz is very centrally located – take the U3 (St. Pauli station) or S1/S3 (Reeperbahn) to get right to the heart of the action.
- Warm up on the winter deck: The upper deck not only offers the best view of the colorful hustle and bustle, but also creative hot drinks. Be sure to try them!
Conclusion: Santa Pauli is loud, colorful, a little crazy — and that’s exactly why it’s highly recommended. If you’ve had enough of traditional Christmas markets and fancy some mulled wine with a local twist, then this is the place for you. Get ready for a festive season — with lots of music, a great atmosphere, and a dash of Reeperbahn charm.
