In Short
Phone away, clay on the wheel, and simply switching off for a few hours: That is exactly what worked surprisingly well during my pottery class at Studio Amun in Hamburg. We took a beginner’s wheel-throwing class here and were surprised by how much fun it is to turn a simple lump of clay into something of your own.
Beginner’s Class at Studio Amun
The Studio Amun is tucked away in an industrial area, but it is still easy to find. Inside, you will find a real ceramics workshop where classes are held and ceramics are also made and designed. There is also a small shop with some truly beautiful ceramics.
The beginner’s wheel-throwing class lasted about 2 hours and 45 minutes. There were around eight of us, and the atmosphere was very relaxed from the start. The instructor explained every step clearly and, despite the group size, kept taking time to help each person individually. That is especially important the first time, because pottery is definitely not as easy as it looks.

Not Easy, but that is Exactly Why it is Fun
First, the clay on the wheel has to be centered before you slowly shape it into the form you want. This takes a surprising amount of finesse. The studio offers different types of clay, including classic, black, and dotted or speckled clay. Depending on the class, you can try out very different looks.
At the end of the beginner’s class, you created approximately two to three pieces yourself. For those, you choose a glaze. The studio takes care of the firing and glazing, so you can pick up your finished ceramics a few weeks later. Both are already included in the class price.
Simply Switch off for a While
What we especially liked about pottery is that it keeps you completely occupied. You focus on your hands, the clay, and the wheel, and suddenly your phone, messages, and to-do lists no longer matter. At the same time, the whole experience is creative and relaxing and it also helps train your fine motor skills. Then there is that pretty good feeling when a lump of clay slowly turns into a real vessel.
How Much Does a Pottery Class at Studio Amun Cost?
The beginner’s class cost €84 for a weekday morning session. On weekends, the price was €89. For just under three hours of instruction, materials, and the later glazing and firing of two to three pieces, we think the price is absolutely fair. Since prices and class offerings can of course change, you should check the current terms directly with the studio before booking.
Practical Tips for Your Pottery Class
- Wear clothes that you do not mind getting a little clay on.
- Very long fingernails can be rather impractical when working at the wheel.
- Take a look at the different types of clay and glazes in advance if you already have a particular look in mind for your ceramics.
- Keep in mind that you cannot take your pieces home right away. They will only be fully fired and glazed after a few weeks.
- Go into the class without setting your expectations too high for your first pieces; small imperfections are simply part of pottery.
- After the class, stop by the small shop if you like modern ceramics.
