In Short
In Hamburg’s harbor district, just a stone’s throw from the Elbphilharmonie, a small café called Moons & Cream opened its doors in May 2024. The cute café is run by a young woman who specializes in a particular type of pastry: the so-called “New York Rolls”, here they are named “Moons”. These round treats are reminiscent of croissants in terms of their dough and come with various fillings – from pistachio cream and vanilla to Oreo and Bueno.
Atmosphere & Location
Moons & Cream is a small, cozy café that offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Perfect for enjoying something sweet after a visit to the Elbphilharmonie. Despite the rather small space, the interior is beautiful and inviting, making it a nice place for a short break.
Food & Drinks
Moons & Cream offers a wide selection of treats. The main attraction are the moons, which tempt with various fillings such as pistachio cream, Oreo or vanilla and strawberries. A highlight is the option of filling the moons with ice cream. For €7.50, you can get a moon with two scoops of ice cream, a topping and a sauce of your choice. Toppings include Biscoff cookies, Bueno and Oreo, while the sauces range from caramel to chocolate. The ice cream selection is varied and also offers some vegan varieties, such as vegan chocolate.
We tried the following:
- Moon with pistachio and cheesecake ice cream, biscoff crumbles and chocolate sauce (€7.50)
- Pistachio moon (€6.90)
- Vanilla moon with strawberries (€5.90)
- Pistachio latte (€5.90)
- Brownie Iced Latte (€4.50)

Did it Convince us?
The pistachio latte for €5.90 and the brownie iced latte for €4.50 were delicious! We liked both drinks, and they were quite big, which makes the price-performance ratio for the drinks good.
Unfortunately, we can’t quite say the same about the moons. The dough of the moons was dry and didn’t taste fresh, more like an old croissant. The moon with ice cream turned out to be particularly disappointing: the ice cream was hard and not creamy, and also quite sweet. The combination of hard dough and firm ice cream was simply not what we had expected.
The moons that had already been filled were slightly better, but they didn’t completely convince us either. Despite the promising combinations of fillings, toppings and sauces, the moons fell short of our expectations.
Conclusion
Moons & Cream certainly has potential, particularly thanks to its fantastic location and innovative concept. The prices are relatively high, but this is understandable given the exclusive location. Our experience was mixed, but we would like to emphasize that this is just a snapshot. Maybe we just had a bad day. We recommend giving Moons & Cream a chance and seeing for yourself – you might have better luck with your choice.
