In Short
If you’re looking for a really good place to have breakfast, you should add Weidenkantine Hamburg to your list. With two locations — one in Altona on Spritzenplatz and one in Eimsbüttel — this café is no longer an insider tip. We visited the Altona location and can say in advance: this place has it all: from the atmosphere to the service to the food.
Twice in Hamburg, Feeling Truly at Home
The Weidenkantine has locations in both Altona and Eimsbüttel — we visited the one on Spritzenplatz. As soon as you walk in, you notice that a lot of attention has been paid to detail. Light wood tones, cozy seating, a mix of modern and relaxed — it’s the kind of place where you can immediately let your guard down.
It’s lively, but not loud. Stylish, but not pretentious. Just the right mix for a leisurely breakfast with friends or a relaxed start to the weekend.
Cake Paradise with Vegan Variety
The large selection of cakes is a real highlight. From classic varieties to vegan options, there is something for everyone. Whether you are a chocolate fan or a fruit lover, there is something for everyone here. And honestly, just looking at the cake counter puts you in a good mood.
What also impressed us was the service. Super friendly, attentive, and pleasantly unobtrusive. You feel welcome and well taken care of — and that really adds to the overall experience.

Cheese, Porcini Cream, and that Wow Moment
This cheesy scrambled egg sandwich really surprised us. We expected it to be delicious, but not with this combination. The fluffy scrambled eggs meet spicy cheddar, accompanied by an intense, creamy porcini mushroom cream that gives the whole thing real depth. The pickled red onions add a slight acidity, Parmesan provides extra flavor, and the cress adds a fresh finish. Served on crispy sourdough bread, it’s simply a perfect combination.
The small breakfast was also exactly what you want in the morning. Hearty sourdough bread, aromatic mountain cheese, an organic egg, and homemade jam. But what we particularly loved was the whipped salted butter. So simple – and yet it makes everything just that little bit better.
The brownie was quite substantial, almost a bit of a challenge — but incredibly good. Moist, chocolatey, with a lovely cream and fruity raspberry as a contrast. Accompanied by a creamy matcha latte, spicy chai, or fresh mint tea — the perfect end to a long breakfast.
Breakfast at the Weidenkantine in Hamburg
What we definitely want to try next time: lunch. From 12 noon onwards, the Weidenkantine also offers a changing lunch menu. If it’s as good as the breakfast, then it’s definitely worth a visit at lunchtime too.
Our conclusion: The Weidenkantine in Hamburg-Altona is a really great spot for anyone who loves a good breakfast, a relaxed atmosphere, and a great selection of cakes. We’ll definitely be back — maybe for lunch next time.
