In Short
If you’re looking for a cozy café with first-class matcha and delicious pastries, then Brühwerk in Hamburg’s city centre is just the place for you. This two-storey café at Ferdinandstraße 40a, just a stone’s throw from Jungfernstieg, has established itself as a real hotspot for matcha fans. In addition to high-quality matcha creations, there are also delicious bagels, French rolls and a large selection of coffee specialties. The best part? If you fall in love with matcha, you can buy it on the spot and take it home with you.
Inviting Ambience with Modern Flair
As soon as you enter Brühwerk you notice: A lot of emphasis has been placed on atmosphere here. Large windows flood the room with natural light, creating a bright, friendly atmosphere. The furnishings are modern, but not cool – just the right mix of stylish and cozy. On the upper floor, there are comfortable couches that invite you to sit down with a matcha latte and relax or be productive for a few hours.
Speaking of productive: many guests come with their laptops and work here, which is a sign of the relaxed and quiet ambience. A small but welcome extra: free water for all guests.
Varied Offer for Small and Large Appetites
Brühwerk not only impresses with its ambience, but also with its varied menu. Here you’ll find everything you need for a relaxed start to the day or a delicious afternoon snack.
On this day there were:
- Bagels – e.g. with salmon or tomato & mozzarella
- Franzbrötchen – the Hamburg classic that never disappoints
- Pain au Chocolat – buttery, chocolaty, perfect with coffee
- Panini with cheese – hearty and filling
But the real highlight is the huge selection of matcha creations. In addition to classic matcha lattes, there are creative iced varieties with strawberry, blueberry, vanilla and more.
Our Choice:
Of course, we tried some of the specialties, and one thing we can already say: quality is a top priority here!
- Iced Strawberry Matcha (€6.85) – The perfect balance of tangy matcha and fruity strawberry. Nice and chilled, super refreshing and not too sweet.
- Iced Café Latte (€4.30) – Classic, creamy and just right if you’re craving a cool dose of caffeine.
- Large Matcha Latte (€5.80) – Intense in taste, with a velvety texture and just the right sweetness.
- Large café latte (€4.30) – A solid classic with good espresso and fine milk foam.
- Franzbrötchen (€2.80) – Buttery soft, with the perfect amount of cinnamon and a slightly caramelized crust – just the way it should be.
- Tomato and mozzarella bagel (€5.50) – A crispy bagel topped with juicy tomatoes and melt-in-the-mouth mozzarella. Simple, but super tasty!

Particularly noteworthy are the matcha creations, which differ significantly in taste from what you would normally find in Hamburg. The Iced Strawberry Matcha was a real highlight – the sweet strawberry note perfectly complements the matcha flavor without masking it. The classic matcha latte also impressed us: beautifully creamy, intensely green and without any bitter notes. You can tell that high-quality matcha is used here.
The Franzbrötchen did not disappoint us either. Hamburg is known to have high standards when it comes to this cinnamony pastry – and Brühwerk delivers. Fluffy, buttery and just the right sweetness. Add a café latte and the afternoon is saved!

Conclusion: A Must for Matcha Lovers
Brühwerk is more than just another café in Hamburg’s city center – it is a hotspot for matcha fans and anyone who loves high-quality drinks and a relaxed atmosphere. The large selection of creative iced matcha drinks in particular sets it apart from other cafés. There are also delicious snacks, comfortable seating and an inviting atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
Whether for a quick coffee, an extended laptop day or simply to enjoy one of the best matcha experiences in Hamburg – a visit to Brühwerk is definitely worthwhile!
