In Short
In the midst of pre-Christmas Hamburg, we discovered a place that feels like a little trip to the Alps – only without the long journey and snow chains. The Grand Elysée Hamburg’s winter chalet really won us over with its rustic charm, crackling cosiness and fantastic cheese fondue. Add to that a mulled wine at the hotel’s own winter market – and the December blues are history.
Deluxe Mountain Hut Magic – Right in the City Center
The Grand Elysée in Rotherbaum is known as a sophisticated hotel, but during the winter season, they create a special highlight on the terrace. The Winter Chalet is a mixture of ski lodge and lounge: wooden walls, fluffy furs over the chairs, soft lighting that bathes everything in a warm glow. You immediately feel cozy — as if thick snow were falling outside, even though it’s more likely to be drizzling in Hamburg.
Outside, the small in-house Christmas market sparkles, offering everything your heart desires during Advent: hot crêpes, mulled wine, and more — we even discovered a “hot Aperol.” The entire market is charming and small, making it a good alternative to the usual crowded squares in the city center.

What we Ate – and Why we Would do it Again
First, we treated ourselves to a hearty plate (“Brotzeit”) — with aromatic cheese, ham, bread, and crunchy vegetables. The portion was large enough for two people to comfortably share and get in the mood.
But the absolute highlight was the cheese fondue. Creamy, hot, and fragrant with mountain cheese — just as it should be. And there was plenty to dip: fresh bread, small potatoes, sweet grapes, crisp broccolini, olives, pickles, and even a small, fresh salad. Our personal favorite was the toppings: roasted onions and crunchy peanut crumbs to sprinkle on top. We thought it was really delicious! It’s also the perfect winter meal in a really great atmosphere – we highly recommend it!
Our Conclusion
Whether for a relaxed dinner for two, a winter girls’ night out, or a small company party, the Winter Chalet is a real insider tip for anyone who likes things cozy, delicious, and festive. No crowds, no Christmas market stress — instead, a cozy break with style and lots of cheese.
