More than just a Means of Transportation: The Perfect Port Alternative
Sure, a classic harbor tour is perhaps more spectacular, with extra information about the sights and a longer duration. But ferry 62 offers you a great alternative if you’re traveling on a budget. The wind in your hair, the glistening waters of the Elbe below you, that’s pure Hamburg feeling! Especially in good weather, you can make yourself comfortable on the upper deck, enjoy the view over the city and just let yourself drift along.
You Shouldn’t Miss These Stops
Ferry Line 62 starts at the Landungsbrücken (bridge 3) and stops at several exciting stations. You can hop on and off at any time to explore the surrounding area. The stops are:
- Altona (fish market): Perfect for a visit to the famous fish market if you get there early enough.
- Dockland: Not only the futuristic office building awaits you here, but also a breathtaking view from several restaurants and cafés.
- Neumühlen/Övelgönne: Your spot if you want to go to the Elbe beach, the perfect place to relax or take a walk along the water.
- Bubendey-Ufer: A quiet spot with unspoiled nature.
- Finkenwerder: If you like it a little quieter, this is the perfect end point. Tip: There’s a great outdoor pool here with a view of the Elbe!
A small special feature: the ferries are operated by HADAG, and the fleet is as colorful as Hamburg itself! Some ferries are decorated with motifs such as the “Lion King” or “Michael Jackson”, and there is a brand new Iglo ferry with Captain Iglo as a figure on the bow, a real eye-catcher!
Where are you Sitting?
The nice thing about the ferries is that you have a free choice: Do you want to sit at the top, feel the wind and sun and watch Hamburg’s skyline pass you by? Or would you prefer to sit comfortably below, sheltered from the wind and rain? Both have their charm, and you can decide depending on the weather.
Practical Tips:
- Free with an HVV ticket: As long as you have an HVV ticket, the ferry 62 won’t cost you a cent extra, ideal for a cheap way to experience Hamburg from the water.
- Best time to travel: Early in the morning or later in the afternoon is often less crowded. It can be particularly busy at weekends during the day, so allow plenty of time.
- Wind and weatherproof: Hamburg’s weather is often unpredictable, a light scarf or jacket can come in handy even on sunny days, especially on the upper deck.
- Don’t forget the Elbe beach: If you get off at Neumühlen/Övelgönne, you’re only a few steps away from the Elbe beach. A must if you want to experience a bit of sun and sand! There’s also the Café Strandperle here, which you shouldn’t miss!
