In Short
Anyone who thinks going to the movies is simply about grabbing popcorn, finding a seat, and watching a film will quickly be proven wrong at the Astor Film Lounge in HafenCity. Here, a trip to the cinema feels more like a stylish evening out — somewhere between a boutique hotel and an elegant living room.
Arrive, Unwind, and Start With a Toast
From the moment you step inside, it’s clear that this is no ordinary cinema. Instead of a hectic concession stand, you’re welcomed by an elegant lounge with comfortable seating. No overwhelming smell of popcorn, no crowds — just a relaxed start to the evening.
You settle in, take a moment to unwind, and are greeted with a complimentary welcome drink — whether it’s a glass of sparkling wine, a refreshing spritz, or simply orange juice. That small gesture alone helps you switch off immediately and makes the experience feel more like visiting a stylish bar than a movie theater.

Cinema, but Elevated: Premium Seating and Personal Service
Once you step into the auditorium, that special feeling continues. The screening rooms are intentionally kept on the smaller side, creating a pleasantly intimate atmosphere. Instead of tightly packed rows, you’ll find spacious premium recliners that can be leaned back comfortably — complete with an adjustable footrest. At this point, you probably won’t want to get up again.
As soon as you settle into your seat, you’ll notice the next difference: there’s no need to queue for snacks. Using a QR code or simply by ordering from the staff who move through the auditorium, you can have everything delivered directly to your seat.
Snacks and Drinks Delivered Right to Your Seat
The selection ranges from soft drinks and coffee to wine, beer, and cocktails. Of course, popcorn is available too — just without the usual cinema chaos. Instead, everything feels thoughtfully designed and a touch more refined.
We also tried a few of the snacks on offer:
The “Astor Cuts” snack platter (€12.50) featured pepper sausages, salami, and South Tyrolean speck, served with mixed pickles and baguette — perfect for sharing. We also ordered “Ziemlich beste Freunde” (€9.50), a combination of Parmesan bites, flavorful olives, and baguette. For that classic cinema feeling, a large portion of salted popcorn (€5.20) was a must. To finish on a sweet note, the milk chocolate truffle almonds (€5.90) were a real highlight.
A Movie Experience With Top-Tier Sound
The Astor Film Lounge also delivers when it comes to the technical side of the experience. Thanks to Dolby Atmos, the sound feels incredibly clear and immersive without ever being overwhelmingly loud. During our screening of The Drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, it added noticeably to the overall atmosphere.
The combination of high-quality sound, exceptionally comfortable seating, and a calm, respectful audience turns a movie night here into a genuinely memorable experience.
A Premium Price, but Worth it
At around €18 per ticket, this is definitely more expensive than your average cinema visit. Food and drinks are also priced at the higher end. But in return, you’re getting much more than just a movie. It feels more like a complete evening experience — one that’s especially worth it for a special occasion.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- It’s best to book your tickets online in advance, as the smaller rooms tend to sell out quickly
- Arrive with enough time to relax in the lounge and enjoy your welcome drink before the film starts
- Choose seats in the middle of the auditorium for the best view and the most immersive sound experience
- Sharing one of the snack platters is a great option if you’d like to try a variety of items
- Plan for a slightly higher budget, as both tickets and food are on the premium side
- Perfect for special occasions or a date night, less suited for a quick spontaneous cinema visit
