In Short
Who says you only go to a café for the coffee? At Café Katzentempel, you go primarily to spend time with some of the city’s most charming and active four-legged friends. A bright café that not only impresses with its vegan menu, but also with its fluffy inhabitants, who take every visitor’s heart by storm.
A Feel-Good Place for Two and Four-Legged Friends
When you enter the Katzentempel in Hamburg’s Hafencity, it is immediately clear that this is no ordinary café. Large windows flood the room with light and offer a wonderful view of the cats at play from the outside. The interior is designed to make not only people, but also cats feel right at home. Wooden structures hang from the ceiling, on which the furry friends balance above the heads of visitors.
The café attaches great importance to the well-being of its animal residents. Unfortunately, there are always visitors who don’t quite understand the rules and cause unnecessary stress to the cats with their behavior. For example, there was a group of young girls who ran after the cats screaming – really not nice. However, such moments are rather rare and are quickly brought under control by the attentive staff, who always keep a watchful eye on the cats’ welfare.
The Inhabitants of the Temple
From shy Cola to curious Kiki – the Café Katzentempel is home to nine unique feline personalities, all waiting to be cuddled and stroked. Their names say it all, and each animal brings its own character to the café. We could have sat and watched the cats play and cuddle forever. You can even play with some of the toys with the little fur noses yourself. However, it is important to respect the four-legged friends’ boundaries at all times!

Culinary Delights in the Katzentempel
The food and drinks on offer are completely vegan and range from aromatic drinks such as green tea and golden latte to breakfast options such as the fur nose breakfast or a croissant sandwich. Of course, there are also more hearty dishes for lunch such as burgers or bowls and salads.
While we would describe the food overall as “tasty with some compromises”, there were a few highlights. The fur nose breakfast offered a perfect mix of sweet and savory components, and the burger certainly lived up to expectations.
Small Cutbacks
However, there were a few aspects that didn’t quite round off our visit. The croissants, part of our fur nose breakfast, tasted a little too greasy, which slightly tarnished the otherwise positive impression. Unfortunately, the Golden Latte was also not to our taste. The flavor of the drink was a little too intense for us and we had to leave it in the end. Also, we had hoped for more coffee flavor in the cappuccino, but instead the milk foam dominated the drink.
A special detail that underlines the attention to detail in the café is the decoration of the food with a small paw print – a sweet symbol that shows the bond with the cats.
All in All
Café Katzentempel is a true temple for cat lovers and those who want to become one. Despite minor criticisms of the food, a visit is worth the experience for the adorable cats and the loving atmosphere alone. It is a place that shows that the well-being of the animals comes first and where you can enjoy a nice break in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city. A visit here is not just something for the eye, but also for the soul – even if you might come back for the cats rather than the food.
