Living Room Vibes Between Cupcakes and the Scent of Tea
As soon as you walk in, Patisserie Chouette feels more like a stylish living room than a classic café. A comfortable couch invites you to sink in, the lighting is warm, and everything seems to have been lovingly chosen. We arrived right at opening time at 10 a.m., after a morning of delays on Hamburg’s public transport system, the mood was a little subdued at first, but gradually became more relaxed.
When you enter, your gaze immediately wanders to the counter and it really is a little highlight. Every single tartlet looks like a work of art. Shiny glazes, fine details, perfectly placed decorative elements. Here you realize: this is no coincidence, there is craftsmanship, patience, and a lot of passion involved.
In terms of price, we are in the upscale café segment. But honestly: for what ends up on the plates here, we think it’s fairly priced.
Our Selection: From Savory to Heavenly Sweet
We tried everything across the bar and tested the following:
- Taco with yuzu, lemon, and mint – €7.90
- Clouds with popcorn and salted caramel – €7.90
- Passion fruit – €8.90
- ½ Baumkuchen – €7.00
- Grilled cheese sandwich (vegetarian with pumpkin and cranberries) – €7.20
- Matcha latte – €5.70
- Chai latte – €4.70
- Fresh mint tea – €4.20
Crispy, Creamy, Surprising
Let’s start with something hearty: the grilled cheese sandwich was a real highlight. The bread, homemade and toasted to a golden brown, was beautifully crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. We had the vegetarian version with pumpkin and cranberries and were honestly surprised at how well this combination worked. Sweet fruitiness meets spicy cheese and soft pumpkin, the whole thing is not only exciting, but also very filling.
Then it was time to get creative with the tartlets. The “Wölkchen” with popcorn and salted caramel is exactly what you’d hope for: sweet meets salty, fluffy meets creamy. But be warned, this one packs a punch. Pretty powerful, pretty intense, pretty good.
The passion fruit also won us over. This trendy fruit shows why it is so popular right now. Inside is a fruity gel, surrounded by light mango mousse and covered with a thin layer of chocolate. The fresh, slightly tart flavor is particularly strong. Nothing is overly sweet; everything is perfectly balanced.
And then there’s the Baumkuchen, for me personally, the absolute highlight. Crispy chocolate on the outside, soft on the inside with a delicate marzipan note. It comes with a small chocolate seal bearing the patisserie’s logo, details like this are simply adorable. A classic interpretation, but anything but boring.
Only the yuzu lemon mint taco didn’t quite convince us. It was a little too sweet for our taste and generally not to our liking, but it looked great!
