In Short
Here comes a recommendation for a super cute and cozy restaurant in Hamburg! We felt very comfortable and will definitely come again. The food is super tasty, the service is top and also the quality of the food leaves nothing to be desired.
Philipps Restaurant
It was time for a nice dinner again. We did not have to search long before we came across the Michelin-recommended Philipps Restaurant in the selection of all the good restaurants in Hamburg. The location in the middle of the Karolinenviertel is a bit unusual for this sweet and cozy restaurant. Exiting the subway station “Feldstraße”, it took us past walls full of graffiti, bars and hip restaurants. Then, in a smaller side street, we found Philipps restaurant in a souterrian location.
Arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted warmly, we could hand in our wardrobe and were led to our table. On the way to our seats, we have already seen how beautifully this restaurant is furnished. We immediately got a comfortable feeling. Our table was perfect! We were allowed to sit in a small alcove next to the wine storage, and it was super private, yet open – beautiful! The decor is also perfect for the ambiance in the restaurant, and every corner was used without it looking too crowded.
In general, the restaurant is relatively small, so we recommend booking in advance. The staff is super nice. When we made ourselves comfortable at our table, the waitress came to bring us the food and wine menus and tell us about the daily recommendations. If you do not speak German, the waiters are happy to serve you in English.
As an apéritif, we ordered two glasses of Cremant Brut (8.50 € per glass).
A Great Start into the Evening
With our champagne came a small appetizer in the form of various breads (multigrain, fennel bread, lavender bread, tomato bread and pretzel). The small breads came from a small local bakery and were freshly baked. They were accompanied by seaweed butter with soy, shallot curd, olive oil as well as sea salt. A mix of unusual components that were perfectly matched and beautifully presented – a great start to the evening!
While we were getting started on the small appetizer, the team stepped it up a notch and brought us a greeting from the kitchen. On a curved spoon we were served Tataki of venison calf, a celery cream and salt apple. Again, the presentation was superb! Against expectations, the small dish was cold, yet super tasty!
With a bit of a break came an appetizer, which we ordered: Philipp’s cherry tomato cream soup with basil pesto (9 €). And again, I can only repeat myself: The presentation was insane! On a plate with a large rim and deep indentation in the middle, the tomato soup looked even more special. The taste was also great. Creamy, fruity and light at the same time.
The Main Course
For our main course, we opted for the following:
- To drink: A bottle of still water (5.60 €)
- Original Viennese Schnitzel of veal saddle with potato field salad and cranberries (29.50 €)
- French white feathered chicken gently cooked with vegetable bed, potato leek purée and cream sauce (36.50 €)
After a bit of a wait, these dishes arrived and looked great. I feel like I am repeating myself a lot in this post, but I just have to stress how beautiful the dishes looked and with that, how much love was put into the ambiance. As you can see in the pictures, the breading on the schnitzel was so loose and light that it almost looked like a balloon. Taste-wise, it was unbeatable: The meat was paper-thin and perfectly seasoned. For me personally, the potato and field salad lacked that certain something.
The side dishes of the chicken were perfectly cooked and great with each other. The star of the dish, the chicken, was also delicious. Here, however, the meat was a wee bit too dry for us. Also, the price is pretty high for the amount of food you get.
A Worthy Ending
To finish the evening, we ordered a dessert:
- Decaffeinated Cappuccino (3.60 €)
- Warm chocolate cake with liquid center, passion fruit sorbet and meringue (11.50 €)
The cappuccino came with a small piece of cake on the spoon, even this tasted like homemade. Also, the waitress brought us both white and brown sugar for the coffee. And now all chocolate lovers must listen carefully: It was unbelievably delicious! This cake just melted in your mouth and tasted incredibly chocolaty. The passion fruit also added a fresh touch. Especially for dark chocolate fans, this is a real must-try.
