Between modern interpretations of Chinese cuisine and a breathtaking backdrop, you can indulge your senses here. But as with any journey, there are highs and lows. Immerse yourself with us in this unique oasis that promises a lot, but doesn’t deliver everything.
A Paradise in the Middle of the City: An Atmosphere for Dreaming
When you enter Yu Garden, you immediately feel transported away from the hustle and bustle of Hamburg. The impressive architecture and detailed design leave no doubt that the soul of China comes alive here. The spacious outdoor area with ponds spanned by picturesque bridges invites you to linger. The fish and turtles in the water lend the whole place an idyllic tranquility that is rarely found in the big city.
Service with a lot of Room for Improvement
So much praise for the atmosphere, but unfortunately the service is lacking. Our visit was characterized by inattention and chaos. Although the restaurant was almost empty that day, we had to wait – and not too little. Cutlery was simply forgotten, orders were mixed up, and then a waiter came to our table with a glass of wine while he was on the phone – even though we hadn’t ordered it. It makes you wonder whether you’re sitting in one of Hamburg’s finest restaurants or in a poorly organized canteen. Of course, nobody expects perfection, but a minimum of attention would have been nice.

We tried the following dishes and drinks:
- Appetizers:
- Homemade spring rolls (2 pieces) – €7.60
- Baked dumplings filled with chicken and vegetables – €8.90
- Dim sum mix (3 pieces) – €8.90
- Main Courses:
- Mushroom mix (morels, enoki, shiitake, king oyster mushrooms) – €21.50
- Fried rice with chicken and vegetables – €21
- Drinks:
- Green tea ice cream with fresh fruit – €7.50
- Milky oolong tea – €7.90
- Jasmine tea – €4.90
- Mojito – €10
- Aperol Spritz – €8.50
A Modern Interpretation of Chinese Classics
The food at Yu Garden is a mix of traditional flavors and modern interpretations. The dim sum was tasty, but the mix turned out to be shrimp-heavy, which was not announced – perhaps a mistake in the kitchen, maybe bad luck. The spring rolls and baked dumplings were convincing, with a crispy coating and a hearty filling that was very well seasoned. The mushroom mix surprised us with a variety of textures and flavors that at least partially justified the relatively high price. The fried rice was solid, but could have used more refinement.
To finish, there was a green tea ice cream, which scored points for its freshness and balanced sweetness. A successful finale, but one that could not quite make up for the average quality of the main courses.
Conclusion: A Visit with Mixed Feelings
The Yu Garden in Hamburg is undoubtedly a place you have to visit – whether it’s because of the dreamlike setting or the appealing cuisine. But beware: the service could spoil your mood, and the prices are definitely not a bargain. We might have caught them on a bad day, but the potential of this place is unmistakable. Try it out for yourself and let yourself be enchanted by the atmosphere – and maybe you’ll have better luck with the service!
