In Short
The historic Roncalli Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric in Hamburg. Under the motto “Art instead of commerce”, it delights thousands of visitors every year with its lovingly designed stalls, unique atmosphere and special highlights. But best of all: this market is not only beautiful, but also a pioneer in sustainability. Let’s dive in!
Flying Santa Claus – Magic in the Sky
An absolute highlight of the market? The flying Santa Claus! Every day at 4, 6 and 8 pm, he floats over the square in his sleigh and tells the story of Rudolf and the other reindeer. It’s a magical moment that not only makes children’s eyes light up.
Mulled Wine with Character – Regional and Organic
No Christmas market without mulled wine! An exclusive specialty awaits you at the Rathausmarkt: the specially created Rathausmarkt mulled wine. The organic mulled wine is supplied by a winegrower from the Palatinate, and the recipe is a well-kept secret.
There is another wonderful Christmas market right next door on Jungfernstieg!
Toy Alley and Themed Streets – a Festival for Explorers
One of the most charming corners of the Christmas market is the toy alley. Here you will find toys from all over the world – handmade, lovingly designed and ideal as gifts for the little ones. But that’s not all: the market is divided into various themed streets where you can discover arts and crafts, wood carvings, Christmas decorations and much more. Traders from the most diverse regions ensure a variety that will make every heart beat faster.
Focus on Sustainability – a Christmas Market with a Heart
What makes the Historic Christmas Market special is its commitment to sustainability. Here, 100 percent green electricity is used and modern LED lighting saves energy. After 11 pm, the lighting is switched off completely to save energy. Plastic packaging is taboo, and you will get your drinks and food either in paper bowls or in reusable crockery.
Also, they paid a lot of attention to sustainability when it comes to the fir trees. They come from forestry that does not require chemical weed control and are completely composted at the end of the market. Waste separation is strictly enforced – a Christmas market that shows how tradition and environmental awareness can go hand in hand.
