In Short
When a café manages to make us fly away on clouds of green matcha foam every time, then one thing is clear: we have to write about it. Lowinsky’s in Hoheluft is just such a place. A mix of charming New York flair, warm service and damn good taste – literally. We come here regularly and will now tell you why this café should be at the top of your Hamburg bucket list.
Hoheluft Coziness
As soon as you walk in, Lowinsky’s feels a bit like Brooklyn – but with the Hoheluft coziness. The owner Hillel, a native New Yorker, often greets you himself, always has an open ear and that very special vibe that sticks with you. It’s personal, it’s warm and you immediately feel at home. So it’s no wonder that the place is almost always full. But: it’s worth coming early. Because if you secure one of the cozy seats, you can enjoy the bagels and matcha magic in peace and quiet.
A Café That Really Understands Coffee & Tea
Lowinsky’s is a paradise for anyone who wants more from coffee and tea than just caffeine or a little steam in their cup. Here you can get specialty coffee and a carefully curated selection of teas, including real rarities. Especially the matcha! And we don’t mean just any green powder, but really good varieties with character. You can even choose whether you prefer it earthy and intense or mild and creamy. Our opinion? The best matcha in Hamburg – and we’ve tried many.

A Little Food Firework for in Between
In addition to the drinks, the food plays an important role, too – and wow, what comes out of the kitchen here is simply delicious. From fluffy banana bread to sweet cookies: everything here is baked and topped with love.
During our visit, there were (spring 2025):
- Various bagels with cream cheese, egg & bacon, avocado or salmon
- Grilled cheese sandwiches – crispy on the outside, cheesy-dreamy on the inside
- Juicy banana bread, perfect with a flat white
- Homemade cookies in flavors such as pistachio chocolate, matcha, double chocolate and salted caramel
- Fudgy brownies, where even the last crumb is celebrated

Everything is freshly prepared, special requests? No problem at all. Whether you want to omit, add or completely change something – the team at Lowinsky’s makes it possible. And with a friendliness that is all too rare. As everything is so freshly prepared, there can of course be longer waiting times. But believe us: it’s worth the wait!
Taste & Quality
What we particularly love: Hillel not only pays attention to taste, but also to the origin and quality of the products. You notice this with every bite and every sip. You can also buy the high-quality matcha varieties and matching accessories directly in the café – perfect for taking the Lowinsky’s feeling home with you.
A Few More Practical Tips for Your Visit:
- How to get there: It’s best to get off at Eppendorfer Baum (U3) subway station – it’s only a few steps from there.
- Timing is everything: come early, especially at the weekend. The café is popular – and rightly so!
- Tuesday planning: Currently there’s only take-out on Tuesdays – so drinks and food to go.
- Payment: Card payment possible and very uncomplicated.
- Take-away: Many dishes and drinks are easy to pack, so take something with you for later!
So if you want to eat really well, drink the best matcha in town and simply feel like you’re in a favorite New York café – Lowinsky’s is waiting for you. And we’re pretty sure you’ll be just as addicted to it as we are.
