In Short
On a relaxed Friday evening, we found ourselves at Butcher’s Steakhouse in Hamburg’s Rotherbaum district. Expectations were high: the location is upscale, the restaurant looks chic from the outside, and the menu promises high-quality meat, international classics, and modern side dishes. In short: you expect a special evening. And that’s exactly what it was — with a few little surprises.
Solid Atmosphere With a Minor Flaw
Upon entering, we immediately noticed a peculiar smell — difficult to describe, perhaps a mixture of old cigarette smoke and wood. Not necessarily unpleasant, but noticeable nonetheless. After a few minutes, you get used to it, so it’s no big deal.
The restaurant itself has a classic interior: lots of dark wood, dim lighting, and a quiet, warm atmosphere. It was surprisingly empty for a Friday evening, but that didn’t detract from the atmosphere — on the contrary, it almost felt like a little insider tip. What really stood out was the service. Our waitress Lena was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable throughout. Not only did she give us good advice, she also presented the different cuts of meat right at our table – which came across as both professional and personal.

Spot on in Terms of Taste
The two starters arrived relatively quickly and were delicious. The truffle pasta was aromatic, well seasoned, and creamy. The tempura shrimps were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, served with a mild garlic mayonnaise that rounded off the dish nicely. The price is ambitious for the portion size, but still reasonable considering the quality.
The main courses were where things really got going: both steaks were cooked to perfection, medium rare, just as ordered. The fillet was tender and delicate, while the New York strip had a stronger flavor with a lovely grilled note. The side dishes were also a good overall match — the baby potatoes came with fresh sour cream, the mushrooms were nicely grilled, and the fries were crispy. The herb butter was classic, but could have been a little more refined in flavor.
One thing we noticed was that the presentation of the dishes was very simple. Plates, bowls, cutlery — everything was functional, but somehow not quite in line with the price level. For a restaurant in this location and price category, we would have liked to see a little more attention to detail.
Should you go There?
Butcher’s Steakhouse is definitely a great place for anyone who wants high-quality meat and excellent service. The food is consistently delicious, and the service is attentive and friendly. There are minor deductions for the ambiance and presentation, which could be a little more upscale.
If you want to enjoy a good steak in a quiet atmosphere — without a lot of hustle and bustle, but with quality on your plate — this is the place for you. Butcher’s Steakhouse is definitely worth a visit for special occasions or a relaxed evening.
