In Short
There are many places in Hamburg that can take you back in time. One of these special places is Deichstraße, a historic street near the Speicherstadt warehouse district. Here you can not only admire architectural treasures, but also discover culinary highlights.
A Walk Through History
Deichstraße is one of the few streets in Hamburg that survived the great fire of 1842. If you walk along here, you can imagine what Hamburg’s city center must have looked like before this devastating event. The beautiful half-timbered houses that stretch along the Nikolaifleet tell of a time when office, residential and warehouse buildings were located directly on the water and were supplied via land and water accesses.
Deichstraße not only survived the great fire of 1842, but also the destruction of the Second World War. Thanks to generous donations, it has been restored and is now a living testimony to Hamburg’s history. Although the street is somewhat touristy, it usually remains pleasantly quiet, so you can enjoy the beautiful atmosphere to the full.
Architectural Highlights
The houses in Deichstraße are not only historical relics, but also architectural beauties. With their ornate façades and the cobblestones below, they make a picturesque sight.
Particularly interesting is the little alleyway that leads to a floating platform – a real insider tip! An entrance to the platform is located next to the Ti Breizh restaurant. The alleyways are easy to overlook and very inconspicuous, but they are all the more impressive when you walk through them and enjoy the view of the houses from the water.
Culinary Discoveries
In addition to the impressive history and architecture, Deichstraße is also home to some great restaurants and bars. Our absolute favorite spot is Ti Breizh, where you can enjoy authentic and delicious crêpes. Sitting outside, watching the boats pass by on the canal and soaking up the historic atmosphere is an absolute highlight. We can also highly recommend BUDDELS and The Bohemian!
Practical Tips:
- Best time: A visit is particularly worthwhile in the early evening, when the sun bathes the beautiful houses in a warm light.
- Culinary: Be sure to try the crêpes at Ti Breizh – they are a must!
- Exploration: Look out for the secret passage to the floating platform and enjoy the special view of the Nikolaifleet.
- Getting there: Deichstraße is centrally located and easy to reach on foot from Speicherstadt or Landungsbrücken.
