In Short

A sense of Spain right in the middle of Hamburg! We love to come here – the place is absolutely amazing and certainly one of the best Spanish restaurants in Hamburg. Starting with the great service and ending with the mouth watering food, Restaurante Español Picasso does not only bring the native Spanish language into the place but also the warmth and kindness of their culture. The prices are mixed – some prices for tapas, for example, are a little higher, but you get great quality which is worth the money. We personally love to bring friends and relatives who are visiting Hamburg exactly there. You can enjoy a wonderful evening with incredibly delicious food and a great Spanish ambience.

Let’s Start

Are you looking for a date night at a lively Spanish restaurant? Or do you want to invite your family for an exotic dinner? We found your spot!

Picasso is a family-owned Spanish eatery that was founded by a ship’s cook in 1985. Don Luis Méndez wanted to bring the traditional Spanish cuisine into an old and gray part of Hamburg – and oh my, he did a really good job! Today, the restaurant is led by his son and the food could not be better!

Outstanding Service

For this restaurant, we will first have to mention the outstanding service. When reserving a table via phone – which you definitely should do for the dinner hours and the weekend – the personnel is very helpful and tries to accommodate every need. You can hear the people speak Spanish to each other in the background which gives you a quick impression of the atmosphere inside. The personnel of Restaurante Español Picasso does not only bring the native Spanish language but also the warmth and kindness of their culture.

Entering the restaurant, one might feel a quite hectic atmosphere since there are a lot of tables in a rather narrow space. However, once you are seated and you read through the delicious offers on the menu, you start to settle down and enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Let’s Take a Look at the Menu

The menu holds a huge selection, whether fish, meat or vegetarian, there is something for everyone. However, it must be said that the menu is very meat/fish heavy. In addition, there are hardly any vegan dishes. The team of Picasso also provides a great collection of wines and other traditional Spanish drinks.

Delicious Traditional Paella – Food Review

After ordering, a small greeting from the kitchen comes in the form of bread, olives and a flavorful garlic dip. Since we were very hungry, we ordered tapas chorizo a la plancha (5.50€) as an appetizer to go with the bread – this is the perfect appetizer for us and we can only recommend it.

Picasso Appetizer

For the main course, we have decided on this day for two paellas (vegetarian 22.50€ and mixed 26.50€). We also ordered a 200g fillet of beef from the grill (28.50€). According to the menu, the paellas takes about 35 minutes. When we were there, the restaurant was very full and the paellas arrived after about 20-25 minutes!

When the waiter brings the rice pans, you can already hear the rice still sizzling and cooking. The smell of delicious rice, fresh vegetables and choice of fresh meat rises directly into your nose. The dish comes in a pan, so you can portion the food yourself as desired on the plate. To top it off, a piece of lemon is included, which gives the dish an even juicier and fresh touch. And the steak was also incredibly delicious! The meat was perfectly cooked, had great roast and the side dishes were perfectly matched. In addition to the meat, we ordered onions and gravy, which rounded out the dish even more.

If you have ever been to Spain and had a traditional paella, the one at Picasso will take you back there. You can almost taste the effort of the chefs and the staff to bring a little part of the Spanish culture to Hamburg. And if you want to practice your Spanish, the waiters and waitresses are happy to speak the language with you.

Rounding up

To round up the evening, we opted for dessert: Homemade warm chocolate-almond tartlet with liquid chocolate center, accompanied by a scoop of cassis ice cream (8.50€). Instead of the cassis ice cream, we were able choose vanilla ice cream. The tartlet came after about 10 minutes, was hot and incredibly delicious. For all the chocolate fans out there, this is a real treat. The amount of almond in the cupcake was also perfect and added a special touch to the dessert!

Conclusion

All in all, the restaurant is really great and certainly one of the best Spanish restaurants in Hamburg! We personally love to bring friends and relatives who are visiting Hamburg exactly there. You can enjoy a wonderful evening with incredibly delicious food and a great Spanish ambience.
